"The Power of my ancestors has long been the foundation of my union with steel. The innate ability to reflect their higher knowledge and energy allows me to create in all things physical and spiritual." - Alice Smith, 09.17.09
DOWNTOWN DETROIT CAMPUS Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) is proud to present "Woman of Steel," an exhibit featuring the sculpture of Alice Smith. The Public is invited to the Opening Reception which will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2009, 5:30-7:30 pm, at Wayne County Community College District's Downtown Campus, 1001 West Fort Street in the Brown and Juanita C. Ford Gallery. The exhibition runs from October 1 through November 28, 2009. To RSVP to the Opening Reception, please contact Mrs. Julie Figlioli at 313.496.2510.
"My work refers to the spiritual tradition of the Diaspora of people of African descent. I create art that has a historic relationship to the Middle Passage. During this perio d, in an effort to attract good spirits, people placed bottles in trees to use as vessels and receptors of information. I reference this tradition in my art by creating designs and motifs within a contemporary art context. A welded structure adorned with glass faces and forms connects the souls of this ancient world."
In 1997, in recognition of Smith's outstanding talent in glass blowing and casting, Penland School of Crafts (Penland, North Carolina) awarded Smith a full scholarship. In 2000, Smith received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Detroit's College of Creative Studies and in 2005 she earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree in sculpture from Wayne State University.
An educator, Smith is on staff at Wayne State University where she teaches a course on Glass Sculpture. She also has worked with Detroit Public School K-12 students and serves as a liaison for DPS on special projects. Although she has earned an MFA in sculpture, Smith nonetheless always had a deep and abiding passion for glass as an artistic medium. When Smith pursued her MFA, there was no graduate-level glass sculpture program available in the Detroit area. Hence, while she studied sculpture at Wayne State University, she continued to cast glass and blow glass whenever her schedule permitted. Determined to create a niche and voice in the tough world of sculpture where fewer women venture, Smith honed her metal fabrication talents. Today, she often combines glass and metal together to create majestic works of art. Come join us to view this awesome talent!
